Israeli exporter Agrexco is forecasting a 40 per cent rise in tomato exports this year. High yields, increased area under production and a sizeable hike in the number of growers, especially in the northern Negev and the Arava regions are the main reasons for the growth.

The company plans on exporting 15,000 tonnes to Europe and North America, according to Yoel Dashevsky, product manager at Agrexco.

The season is also starting earlier, he said: “This is enabling our growers to ship larger quantities of a wide range of tomato varieties,” he said.

Production area of cherry tomatoes on-the-vine has increased by 80 per cent, and shipments, starting five weeks early, during November and December were up 200 per cent compared with last year. Agrexco’s cherry tomato range now numbers 20 different formats.
