Israeli stonefruit heads to Europe

The first volumes of Carmel-branded stonefruit from Agrexco are on their way to Europe.

The first shipment contains only peaches, although apricots, nectarines, pita nectarines, plums and pears will soon follow.

New additions this year include a new variety of orange apricot, with a sweeter flavour and purple-red colour. There is also a new addition to the pear range, called Red Druz.

Davidi Hayman, Agrexco product manager, said he believes that “this year’s export will reach last year’s record of 5,000 tonnes, in spite of the economic crisis”.

He added: “Europe is the target for stonefruit since Europeans appreciate premium fruits and their unique taste. Our goal is to offer new, tastier varieties with redder inner texture.”

Most of the fruits are grown in the northern part of Israel.
