Israeli show triumphs despite conflict

Despite the Gaza conflict in the south of Israel attendance figures at the annual international Agro Mashov exhibition remained high.

The exhibition took place with more than 18,000 attendees during the fighting in the Gaza strip with many farmers either under threat or having been recruited.

Israel's minister of Agriculture, Shalom Simchon, who also visited the exhibition, said that the damages caused to the farmers from the south of Israel are estimated at a quarter of billion NIS.

Deals made during the show between buyers and growers from Israel and overseas are estimated at more than 100,000 US dollars and more are expected to be finalised in the coming months.

Surprising new vegetable species, in all sorts of colors, tastes, shapes and sizes were presented including the sweet-bite pepper and ‘zebra’ eggplant.

Elsewhere the Momordica, a bitter tasting melon, made an appearance. Researchers in the US have shown that chemicals in the plant are useful for delaying cell partition, thus making it a valuable chemical for cancer and HIV disease.
