Israeli melons are grown in high tunnels

Israeli exporter Agrexco has announced it is kicking off its melon season early thanks to favourable weather conditions.

Galia, Charentais and Spanish variety Magenta form the mainstay of exports this year, and although Charentais is particularly sought after by the French market, volumes of the orange-fleshed variety are also destined for the UK. According to Agrexco, success last season in packaging trials means that fruit will be offered in 5kg boxes and 10-12kg pack weights.

Agrexco’s growers produce Magenta, a variety developed by Spanish breeder, Nuname, in the Dead Sea area and in Northern Arava. Production is concentrated in high tunnels. And Galia will be marketed under he Maayan brand. Yehuda Reichman, Agrexco’s melon product manager is forecasting the export season will run from early March until mid-May.
