Israeli growers in full bloom

Israeli growers plan on exporting 125 million stems - some five tonnes of flowers - to Europe during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year period.

The leading flowers in the export bouquet are red roses and lilies.

According to the Flower Growers’ Association in Israel, 90 per cent of flowers grown in the country are destined for Europe: five per cent directly to European countries excluding the UK and the Netherlands; 10 per cent directly to the UK; 10 per cent through direct deals to the Dutch market; and 75 per cent to Dutch flower auctions.

The association estimates that sales returns this season will amount to €62.5m (£42.2m).

A spokesman said that flowers exported through the Aviv Group reach their sales destinations within 24-48 hours of harvesting, using Aviv’s distribution centres in The Netherlands and Germany which market the flowers.
