Israeli grape kicks off one week early

Israeli exporter Agrexco reports that the grape season will start one week earlier than usual with the first arrivals due in to the UK this Wednesday.

Greenhouse product Early Sweet is the first variety to arrive and there will also be a small amount of Mystery available. “Initially, the volume will be limited but we will see this increase gradually as we get further into the season and we expect to have a normal consistent supply after these first sendings,” said Amos Orr, general manager of Agrexco UK. “The weather has been a bit unpredictable lately - it has been very hot, but equally there have been a few cloudy, colder days.

Fortunately, due to the fact that our growing areas are widespread with the early varieties grown in the Arava and Jordan Valley areas, our supplies should not be affected and we should be able to fulfil programmes set. Quality is looking good. As of last Friday, sugar levels had already reached 15-17 per cent of the level needed; our packhouses have been standing by, putting the final touches in place to be ready and on time to ship out.”

After the first flush, Agrexco will then be bringing in Superior and Thompson and the season will continue through to September.
