Israeli flower exports to jingle at Christmas

Israeli flower growers from the Arava region will send more than 500,000 flowers to western Europe over the festive season, weighing in at nearly 30 tonnes.

The most popular lines for European buyers are sunflowers, Lisianthus, roses and Trachelium.

It is estimated that the growers will register total sales revenue for flowers at €62.5 million (£44.9m) during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year period.

More than 90 per cent of the flower yields are slated for export, with some five per cent destined for European countries excluding Holland and the UK, 10 per cent to the UK, 10 per cent to deals in the Dutch market, and about 75 per cent to the Dutch flower auctions.

Eylon Gadiel, R&D manager of the Arava region, said the potential of the flower sector in the Arava - for cultivation and for export to Europe - is thee times higher than it is today.

He claimed that the flower sector in the Arava region can be a very profitable business, in view of the constant demand - especially from the northern European countries - for flowers during the winter season.

But the number of flower growers in the Arava has declined as a result of a serious shortage of workers.
