Storms hit crops in Israel yesterday, with heavy rain and hail seen across the southern and central coastal plain, the northern Negev and the Valley of Jezreel.

Sources in Israel estimated that the damages amount to NIS 10 million (£1.25m).

Sharonfruit plantations were the worst hit, but it was reported that in some cases the storm destroyed entire crops of vegetables.

Hundreds of farmers have reported damage to greenhouses and other protected structures, in particular, with some completely destroyed.

But Amos Or, general manager of Agrexco UK, played down the impact of the weather. “The bottom line is that this is a normal season,” he told FPJ. “There has been a small and insignificant loss of sharonfruit because of the hail, but today the weather is good, and no rains are forecast from tomorrow.

“It is too early to tell what the cost of the damage will be,” he added.

The Agricultural Insurance Company sent its assessors to evaluate the damage incurred to each farmer, who will be compensated for the losses incurred to him.
