Israeli citrus sendings climb

Israeli exporters have already shipped 41,000 tonnes of citrus this season, 11 per cent more than for the same period last year.

According to the citrus division of the Israeli Plant Production & Marketing Board, significant increases in exports were recorded by Navel which is up a massive 227 per cent, Limquat which is up 130 per cent, Suntina easy-peelers which are up 323 per cent and white pomelo which has increased by 56 per cent.

However, exports of Sweetie to Japan are down to 470,400 cases, compared with 728,020 cases for the same period last year. Tal Amit, general manager of the citrus division, said that the season for Israel’s citrus exports has started well, especially noting strong demand on European markets for red grapefruit where prices have reached €15. He added that growers have the enviable dilemma of not knowing whether to export their fresh product or supply the processing market in view of the very high prices on offer from industry.
