Israeli citrus makes early appearance

The Israeli citrus export season has kicked off earlier than usual, due to a spate of warm weather that has caused early ripening of all varieties.

Red pomelo, Sweetie, red and white grapefruit from Agrexco are already on the market.

Golda Ezuz, citrus division manager for Agrexco, said the 2008 citrus crop will be similar in size to 2007, although some varieties will be greater in volume. “We have high hopes from the fruit that has served as our best ambassador for years,” she said.

Agrexco’s red grapefruit is grown in the northern part of Israel, while Sweetie is produced in the western Galilee.

The firm exports its citrus to western and eastern European countries, including the UK. By the end of October, Sweetie will be exported to Japan as well.
