Israeli avocado boom

Israel’s total avocado yield this year will reach nearly 90,000 tonnes, compared with 40,000t last year.

Oved Barzilay, general manager of Kedem Avocado Gal of the Galilee Development Company, said avocado growers in the northern parts of Israel will harvest 11,000t this year compared to 4,000t last year.

He added that the bulk of the fruit is slated for export to Europe, estimating that the total sales returns of all exporters will generate nearly €65 million. “All of which prompts us to increase the acreage of avocado plantations,” said Barzilay. In addition, Israeli exporters are busy penetrating new markets, especially in East Europe and particularly in Russia, a market considered to have great potential for Israeli fresh produce.
