The festive floral market will celebrate with 100m Israeli stems

Israel will export 100 million flowers to supply the market demand for the forthcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.

Haim Haddad, secretary general of the Flowers Growers’ Association, this week said that though the export quantity this year is similar to that of last year. "The growers revenues will be up 17 per cent, to NIS90m (US$21m), resulting from the rise in the prices of flowers in Europe as well as from the strength of the euro against the Israeli shekel," he added.

The demand in Europe for the forthcoming holiday season is focused on red and white flowers, such as roses, carnations, gerbera, gypsophila, and lilies.

In addition, larger volumes of greens for decoration are expected to be shipped during December. Haddad admitted that unfavourable weather during November and at the beginning of December delayed the ripening of several flower varieties that are on demand for Christmas. Haddad added that new varieties should be pushing Israeli exports upwards. "The export of flowers from Israel can increase significantly if the authorities will allocate more foreign workers to be employed in the country's flower sector," he claimed.
