Israel launches high-sugar apricot

Israel’s Ben-Dor Nurseries has unveiled an extra-sweet apricot, containing 50 per cent more sugar than normal varieties.

Aroma-Cot has a sugar content of 16-22 per cent, against 10-14 per cent in other apricot varieties, but the fruit has a taste balance between sweet and sour and a juicy texture. Its colour ranges between red, yellow and orange.

The early variety of the fruit ripens during the second half of May, and a later-flowering cultivar ripens during July.

“The future development of summer fruits will be focused on aromatic varieties which will either ripen earlier or later in the season,” said Ilana Shabtai, who directs the breeding and developing of new varieties for Ben-Dor.
