Israel is expecting high yields of nectarines and peaches this year and will focus mostly on South Africa as well as filling a temporary shortage of these fruits in Europe in May and Juna. Giora Sella, secretary of the Israel Fruit Growers Association, said that last year Israeli growers "suffered huge losses due to an inability to send fruit to Palestinian markets in Gaza." He maintains that exporting the products to other markets will benefit Israeli growers. The yield of peaches and nectarines this year is expected to reach 50,000 tonnes, of which 5,000 tonnes will be exported, mainly to South Africa and to selected sales destinations in Europe.
