Israel played host to the 2008 annual meeting of AMaPwg (Avocado Marketing and Promotion working group) in the last week of September, as the first shipment of the newly Israeli avocados season arrived into Europe.

The event was headed by Gabi Naamani, who has managed Agrexco’s avocado business for two decades, with the participation of 25 members and representatives from Chile, Peru, Mexico, Spain, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Israel.

The group spent three extensive days in a fruitful conference, along with agricultural and sightseeing tours around the country.

AMaPwg was established in 1999 as a voluntary organisation of producers and exporters from various countries that identified “common interests in developing the avocado consumption all over” the world.

Naamani described the meeting as a simple model of “free competition with free information”. He added that Israel is a leader in the European avocado markets and attaches great importance to the conference, regarding it as a means of contributing to the avocado world.

Starting with the Ettinger avocado variety, with other varieties to join later on, Agrexco’s avocado export season will continue till May 2009, with expected total volume of 35,000 to 40,000 tonnes. Agrexco runs more than 70 per cent of the Israeli avocado export and is aiming to distribute the avocado all over Europe.
