Growers in Israel are now facing the possibility of further reductions in fresh water supply for next season. The government's inaction on projects to create new sources of water for the vital export revenue sector has angered farmers' representatives. They criticise the authorities for an average 40 per cent cut in fresh water quotas this year and possible reductions next year regardless of whether the coming winter sees a return to average rainfall levels. Farmers and growers are also calling for funds to compensate them for lost income. Meanwhile, the Israeli authorities are reported to be looking at implementing new projects already given approval which could see water from the purification of sewage being used in irrigation.
