A new study into healthy eating, in relation to the Isafruit project to increase the consumption of fruit throughout Europe, has been published.

The International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) and the Fruitscience Work Package of the Isafruit project have produced a volume of the ‘Scripta Horticulturae’ series, based on the Isafruit Health Forum “Increasing Fruit Consumption to Improve Health.”

Human health scientists showed that fruit has a positive influence on lowering cholesterol levels and that while the whole fruit retains such characteristics, fractions of it, such as juice, may lose these characteristics. Early indications suggest that drinking cloudy fruit juices may be more beneficial for health.

The forum was held in Brussels in collaboration with the ISHS and the European Economic and Social committee (EESC).

The Forum was the first Isafruit event research results and its contributing activities carried out within the project which brought together social and natural scientists.

Isafruit is a €13.8 million (£11m), EU integrated research project aims to improve health by increasing fruit consumption in Europe which began in January 2006 and will run until the summer of 2010.

Social scientists illustrated fruit consumption patterns in four parts of the EU - the capacity of the fruit supply chain to innovate, and the different consumer types that make up the population in terms of patterns of consumption.

The Scripta has been published and is available for download from the ISHS website (see www.ishs.org/acta).

The objective of Isafruit is to increase the consumption of fruit throughout Europe for the benefit of human health, with particular emphasis on addressing bottlenecks such as consumer preferences, fruit availability and quality, and environmentally-friendly production.
