IoH president Heather Barrett-Mold presents Rob James of Thanet Earth with the Norah Stucken award

The Fresca Group’s Thanet Earth glasshouse complex has been honoured with an award from the Institute of Horticulture.

Rob James, technical manager at Thanet Earth, collected the Norah Stucken Award at the IoH’s annual conference from the institute’s president, Heather Barrett-Mold.

The award commemorates the late Norah Stucken, a former longstanding proprietor of trade magazine The Grower, and is made for outstanding projects that have made a significant impact on horticulture.

After collecting the award, Rob James said: “Thanet Earth was always going to be one of the most ambitious projects ever seen in the horticultural industry, but it had a number of hurdles to overcome before it could become a reality. From funding to planning permission, environmental considerations and logistics, it has taken a considerable effort from many people to reach commercial production in such a short amount of time. To be given this award is testament to this and to the vision of those who have worked so hard to take Thanet Earth off the drawing board and make it part of a bright future for the British salad-growing industry.”

Thanet Earth has planning permission for a total of seven glasshouses, of which three have already been built and are in full commercial production.
