Nunhems’ new Intense beef tomato, designed specifically for the foodservice sector, won the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award 2008.
The accolade was presented to Michel ten Hacken, global head of marketing and sales at Numhems and his team.
The Intense tomato has a dense, firm flesh, which allows the tomato to keep its shape and moisture once it has been sliced. This can significantly reduce cost and wastage in commercial kitchens, said ten Hacken, as well as provide a convenient snack for consumers. "This award proves that we're on the right track", he said. "We've seen a high degree of acceptance among the trade visitors at the show and we'll continue to raise awareness of our product among vegetable growers and retailers".
This was the third time that the award was presented by Fruit Logistica organiser Messe Berlin and German trade magazine Fruchthandel.
Second place in this year's competition went to the Urgurke from Eosta/Enza Zaden (Netherlands) and third went to strawberry-shaped Tomatoberry cocktail tomatoes from Tokita Seed (Japan).
