Dr Elaine Ingham

Soil microbiologist Dr Elaine Ingham is to speak again this year at a two-day seminar to help farmers, growers and consultants involved in both conventional and organic farming, urban horticulture and landscaping to increase their knowledge of improvements to soil quality.

Supported by the Soil Association, the event entitled “Improving Life in Your Soil - using Compost and Compost Tea” will be held at Laverstoke Park, Overton, Hampshire on August 4-5, and will provide an opportunity to listen to Ingham.

The director and president of Soil Foodweb Inc and the Sustainable Studies Institute, as well as a leading organic farming technologist, Ingham will be speaking to UK growers, farmers and agronomists at the seminar, which is being held in the new laboratory complex at Laverstoke Park.

On the first day, Ingham will explain soil biology and the soil food web, as well as an overview of composting and compost tea technologies. During the second day, laboratory manager at University of Southern Cross, Australia, Graham Lancaster will discuss the contribution of soil chemistry to soil fertility and the importance of soil testing.

Laverstoke Park is a 2,500-acre organic farm and is owned by Jody Schechter, who is the first organic grower to set up a laboratory to improve the quality of compost, compost tea and soil on a farm. Soil Foodweb laboratory services are available for commercial horticulture, farming, amenity landscaping and arboriculture. Delegates will be able to look round the fully equipped biological and chemistry facility, as well as the adjacent five-acre composting site.
