Specialist packaging supplier Infia’s innovative side-vented punnets have gone from niche to market-standard in just three years.
The company created and developed the side-ventilation concept and still lays claim to being the only company worldwide to offer this kind of technology.
Alessandro Mariani, export manager at parent company Infia srl in Italy, said: “The reaction of the market has been extremely positive and now this kind of packaging is the standard for table grapes, strawberries and blueberries. Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, and Marks & Spencer are just some of the supermarkets that have appreciated this innovation.”
Research carried out by Carlos Crisosto of the University of California on table grapes last year found that good ventilation of packaging is vital in rapidly pre-cooling produce, blocking ripening and slowing mould growth. He found that fruit in Infia’s punnets pre-cooled 25 per cent faster leading to productivity, energy, shelf-life and lower carbon-footprint gains.
Side ventilation is available on Infia’s K28, K36, K37, K62 and KIT500 punnets. “And the range will grow in the future,” added Mariani.
