The Agricultural Biotechnology Council (abc) has welcomed a report by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee.

The report, entitled Securing food supplies up to 2050: the challenges faced by the UK expressed the notion of GM technology being explored further in the context of sustainable food production.

Dr Julian Little, abc chairman, said: “This report rightly recognises the need to find ways to feed an ever-increasing population. The application of advanced genetic science in breeding new crop varieties cannot alone address these massive challenges, but they can be a part of the solution.”

Dr Little also responded to the committee’s call for the government to negotiate a “ceasefire” on the destruction of GM crop trials by saying:

“Vandalism of GM crop trials is unacceptable. This report is correct to urge government to do all that it can to prevent the destruction of trials in the future. It must ensure that UK farmers and consumers don’t miss out on the benefits GM can bring,” he said.
