Industry pioneer Wally Olins dies

Wally Olins, chairman of Louis Reece Ltd from 1961-1985, died on August 16, aged 85. Wally was involved in the fruit industry for 52 years, during which time he became one of the most respected individuals of his generation.

He was a specialist importer and one of the few progressive businessmen who backed the potential of the supermarket business from the early 1960s. His expertise was centred on deep-water imports and English apple marketing and as such he was a leading player in the UK, Australasia, South Africa and the US.

He retired on the sale of his family business to Glass Glover plc but kept in touch with the industry through his three sons, Paul, Laurence and Jonathan, and his nephews Adam Olins and Roger Garber. He enjoyed immensely his involvement with the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers in the latter part of his life.

The funeral will take place at 3pm, on August 18, at Edgewarebury Road, Edgeware, Middlesex, HA8 8LW. The Olins family has requested that no flowers are sent.
