The Pakistani mango season has kicked off with arrivals of Sindhri into the UK starting the four-month season rolling. Supplies from Pakistan take over from neighbouring India.

Mangoes from the sub-continent are characterised by their yellow and green skins and are often highly fragrant. The jewel in the Indian crown, Alphonso has drawn attention from food writers this year, but in the case of the Sunday Times last week, its interest – and a recipe for an Alphonso and passion fruit smoothie – came two weeks after the season closed.

Nevertheless, Pakistan also produces what have become known among traders as speciality types as opposed to the more mainstream blush varieties exported from Spain, Israel, South Africa and sources in and around the Caribbean. Following on from Pakistani Sindhri will be the renowned Chaunsa variety with Sensation also featuring in the portfolio.
