The food and drink sector skills council, Improve, has welcomed three new recruits to its team. The council’s development team, which is responsible for devising employer-led products such as new qualifications, has now consists of two new skills development advisors. Tanya Lowe will support activity around Improve’s Schools Food and Drink Challenge, and will work on careers professional development, employability and life skills. She has just completed a degree in language, human communication and education studies, and will work mainly in promoting careers in the sector. Cristin Grenier, who hails from Rhode Island in the USA, is also a recent graduate and has a language learning and education degree. In her new role, Grenier will focus on the development of new standards and qualifications reform.

Improve’s third new recruit is its new operations manager for the West Midlands, Graham Else. Else will work to identify the skills needed by food and drink manufacturers based in the region, and will represent their needs to key agencies such as the regional development agencies, skills partnerships, and learning and skills councils. Else has more than 20 years’ experience in the training sector, working for a mix of private companies, public bodies and educational institutions.

“The growth of the development team reflects the increased amount of work being undertaken to expand careers and training opportunities in food and drink,” said Jack Matthews, Improve’s chief executive. “This year has seen the launch of the first new-style S/NVQs and new VLQs, which have been developed to better fit the needs of industry. We also continue to raise awareness about the career opportunities in food and drink, among potential new recruits and existing sector employees.”
