Ike strike keeps importers in the dark

On Wednesday, UK importers were still in the dark as to the extent of damage to grapefruit crops in Cuba caused by hurricane Ike.

The devastating storm ravaged Haiti over the weekend causing loss of life, then swept over Cuba. Telephone lines in the Communist state were down, making international communication impossible. At its peak, Ike’s wind speed reached 100mph. Grapefruit production is spread on the north and south sides of Cuba, although it is the southern end of the island that is feared worst hit.
