IGD instigates water push

Market analyst IGD is to host a forum on water use next month as it steps up its commitment to improve efficiency in the supply chain.

The Cambridge and Ely Ouse Collaborative Project will host the NFU, DEFRA, Sainsbury's, Natural England and a number of water companies to discuss some of the main issues.

Sainsbury’s environmental project manager Mary Salmon said that this will be a “key inroad into getting more of these projects to join up”.

Judith Batchelar, head of own brand at Sainsbury’s, said: “The key thing for us is showing all parts of the plan - it’s very easy to publish targets and show the goal. But my question is, how are we going to do it? What are the fundamental elements that make up the goal and the drivers and enablers that will make it happen?”

Batchelar stressed that Sainsbury’s is “not a legal minimum company” and that the retailer has “complete buy in at the top level” on the water issue.

She added: “Water is obviously an environmental issue, but it is also a commercial issue. It’s not just about the mitigation of risk but about making that extra step towards good business - those who behave responsibly will fundamentally be more cost effective.”
