Iceland's managing director Mike Coupe has announced he is to leave the frozen food group.

Coupe was poached from Asda in November 2001, but initially failed to boost Iceland's sales. The company replaced its promotional offers and traditional buy-one-get-one-free offer, but customers did not welcome the change.

Chief executive Bill Grimsey said: “Mike felt his long-term future is outside the group. He has presided over an enormous amount of change at Iceland. At Iceland our growth is on track, this was the second quarter of positive like-for-like sales driven almost entirely by the 119 stores that are in the new format.”

The group is currently redeveloping Iceland stores to include fresh produce, hot bread and magazines.
