Hull University Business School’s Logistics Institute has secured top retail guru Christine Cross as a visiting professor.

Cross, a leading independent business adviser and former director of Tesco, will provide extensive retail expertise to the institute. Working alongside staff to further increase the institute’s commercial activity, she will offer vital insider knowledge on creating and winning proposals in the retail industry.

Recognising the potential the institute has - it is the only one of its kind in the North, one of just a handful worldwide and offers a unique mix of academic expertise and bespoke logistics consultancy - Cross was keen to work with the organisation.

She said: “Typically, universities struggle when developing this kind of venture, as they are not set up as consultancies. Business advisers are crucial to ensure initiatives such as this succeed, enabling the worlds of academia and business to reap the benefits of working together.”

Cross will also co-chair the institute’s steering group, which comprises other retail experts. The group will look at the overall strategy of the institute, ensuring it remains unique and on track with its aim to become a leading centre of excellence in global logistics.

David Grant, professor in logistics at Hull University Business School, said: “It is a tremendous coup for the institute to have such an experienced and talented retail expert work with us in this way. It adds another string to our bow and will help ensure the institute continues to move from strength to strength.”

Cross added: “I was honoured and delighted to be asked to become a visiting professor and I will be working alongside colleagues to put the Logistics Institute on the map, not only regionally and nationally, but internationally too.”
