A huge market re-development in South Korea could include a huge shopping mall and rooftop growing garden.

SAMACO president Kim Joo-soo unveiled grandiose plans for the huge Garak market in Seoul to members of the World Union of Wholesale Markets in Istanbul last week.

The €480 million project - funded by local and national government, as well as a loan from national government - is underway with the development of a retail shopping mall including shops sourcing from the market set to conclude in 2013.

The redevelopment of the wholesale market will run from 2013 to 2018.

The site is home to around 5,000 businesses at present and suffers from traffic congestion build up and ageing market structures, according to Joo-soo.

He told delegates: “In the near future with the new project we will be able to determine our price for produce through the auction system.. We will then find different routes to market for the volume and ensure it is efficiently distributed. At the moment we have a lot of smaller volume in smaller vehicles being distributed but under the new system we will increase the volume dealt with in the market at the same time.”

The market will have a garden for the public on the roof and storage space beneath.
