Hot mash cones for cold summers

Mini cones of bangers and mash have been unveiled as the latest all-weather alternative to the ’99 Flake.

Aunt Bessie’s is trying its best to adapt British eating habits to match our increasingly wet summers.

With last summer rated one of the wettest ever recorded and this month seeing the heaviest snowfall at this time of year for almost 20 years, it might not be too long until traditional ice cream vans really are replaced by these heartier British classics. The Met Office has predicted that we can continue to expect wetter and wetter summers.

The erratic weather in 2007 was largely responsible for a 6.6 per cent drop in ice cream sales, while demand for unseasonable comfort food soared. The team at Aunt Bessie’s has stepped in to combine the two.

The warm cones are served from a specially customised Mash Van, filled with creamy, home-style mash and a banger, topped with gravy and a sprinkling of garden peas.

The mashed potato is made using exactly the same ingredients as anyone would at home, with just bona fide potatoes, milk, butter, salt and pepper.

Aunt Bessie’s Mash Van will be touring key cities in the UK throughout April, come rain or shine. Customers will be served by a Mash Van Man dressed in traditional white coat, hat and bow tie.

Jane Jones, marketing manager for Aunt Bessie’s, said: “We all remember the excitement of buying an ice cream from a van on a hot summer day, and we want to keep that tradition going. Now we can keep up the nostalgic thrill of a cone from a van, without the chill.

“Even in the welcome event of a heat wave, Aunt Bessie’s mashed potato in a cone is a tasty savoury alternative that is guaranteed not to melt down your sleeve in seconds.”
