Industry body Horticulture New Zealand is facing painful spending cuts after fruit growers voted to slice 16 per cent from its annual budget at their AGM last week. HortNZ provides advocacy and promotional services for the entire horticulture industry but apple and kiwifruit growers rejected a levy rise from 0.11 per cent to 0.15 per cent of value by 175,675 votes to 51,760. This came despite a national tour by HortNZ in July to garner support for a levy increase by highlighting its work in various sectors. Vegetable growers and other members of the body are already paying a 0.15 per cent levy, so the outcome of the vote now puts a question mark on their contribution and whether it should be cut for the sake of fairness.
