The HorTIPS project for technology transfer brought the field vegetable industry together last week at a conference in Newark, Notts on January 23 for researchers, seed breeders, plant propagators, consultants and growers to determine how seedling vigour can be translated into profitable, high quality crops scheduled accurately for supermarket sales.

Speakers at the event, the first time the whole chain of supply in field vegetables has gathered to address issues of common concern, included representatives from the Plant Propagators Association, Horticulture Research International, Bejo Zaden and Aberdeen University.

A guide for growers on seed quality and establishment to include information from the conference will be produced by independent consultant Hugh Poths. It is due for publication this spring.

HorTIPS also arranged a post-conference meeting of the representatives to further the issues raised at the conference, which it sponsored with Elsoms Seeds.
