Horticulture: where the CAP fits

Growers in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire can gain valuable information on CAP reform at two NFU seminars later this month.

"For the first time, vegetable, ornamental, vining pea and potato growers will be able to claim CAP support payments," said NFU's senior food and farming adviser in the East Midlands, Simon Fisher.

"We know there are growers who have not fully understood the details of the reform, so to help them understand the basic operation of the single payments scheme, NFU is holding two key events* in the region."

The seminars will focus on the crucial issues that they must get their heads round:

• the establishment of entitlements

• the need for fruit, vegetable and potato (fvp) authorisations and

• the operation of the 10-month rule and how it relates to land rental

The key-note speakers at the events, in Newark and Spalding, will be NFU chief horticulture adviser, Philip Hudson and Julie Robinson, a solicitor with NFU's regional legal panel firm Roythorne and Co.

Fisher said: "There are some complicated concepts for growers to try to get their heads round, so listening to Philip Hudson's presentation, ‘Growers guide to the single payments scheme’ will provide a step-by-step guide to the way payments are made and what growers must do to claim them. And Julie Robinson's talk on "Letting arrangements for vegetable and potato land within the 10-month rule" is a must for anyone who rents land to grow crops."

NFU members must register their attendance by fax (01572 824251) or email (Brenda.goode@nfu.org.uk by October 19.
