Spanish marketer Anecoop has confirmed plans to extend production of a new, early-harvesting clementine variety that it claims can greatly improve the profitability of the category in the opening weeks of the season.

The variety, which is named Clemensoon, has been developed over the past decade and was trialled in the market over the past year by Anecoop.

In a statement, the company's commercial director Paco Borras said he was excited and confident about the variety's prospects.

'We can confirm that it is the best early-harvest clementine so far,' he said.

Produced by 25 co-operatives in partnership with Anecoop, Clemensoon is described as having an intense, orange-red peel, orange flesh, excellent flavour and a good amount of juice.

Anecoop also observed that the clementine's flavour, aroma and colour were 'magnificent' and that thin membranes between segments made it easy and convenient to eat.

According to data from the Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research, 35 different varieties of clementine are currently available on international markets.

However, it found in the initial stage of the citrus season – taking mandarins into consideration also – demand was still not being met in terms of availability and quality, especially prior to Clemenules.
