Honeycrunch apples are set to start arriving on the UK market said grower-exporters Pomanjou.

The French company said they were in discussions with Sainsbury's, who sold the apple exclusively last season, and a small amount would also be sold on the UK wholesale market.

Marc Bahbah, spokesman for Pomanjou, said they had doubled production this season to more than 3,000 tonnes on 130 hectares, but were keen not to overstretch on sales and spread themselves too thin.

Bahbah said they were also continuing to develop their partnership with the Dutoit Vrutge group in South Africa, which would see 140 hectares planted over a six year period.

“We’re looking to get 12-month supply. Dutoit are testing it at the moment and if successful will develop the programme.”
