Burgeoning exports of pineapples, bananas, melons and watermelons have boosted overall farm export figures from Honduras for the first three months of 2012.

Banana sendings were worth $130.2 million, according to Honduran press reports. Volumes increased by 39.2 per cent thanks to grower efforts to bring black sigatoka disease under control and improve yields using better fertilisation methods.

The US is Honduras’s main export market although the UK has become an important destination for melons.
