Honduras prepares WTO complaint

Honduras is following Ecuador’s lead and is preparing to lodge an official complaint with the World Trade Organisation over the EU banana import regime.

According to reports in the Honduras press, the national government is preparing a complaint over the EU’s e176 a tonne banana entry tariff. Trade minister Elizabeth Azcona explained that since the tariff was introduced on January 1, 2006 Honduras has been waiting for the EU to suspend it voluntarily in order not to affect on-going negotiations towards a free-trade agreement with Central America. As this has not happened, Honduras is now challenging its legality.
