Citrus lines are grown across most of the Central American country, with some 3,000ha given over to pigmented grapefruit production largely for export to Europe. Orange production until now has been targeted at exports to other Central American countries and the concentrate market in equal share. However, low prices and the fact that the varieties grown are ill-suited to the markets they are grown for and local conditions have hindered the sector in recent years. Producers are now realising the potential of renewing plantings of Valencia to export for the freshly squeezed juicing sector, as well as the fresh market. They are also working to ensure that those areas which are free of Mediterranean fruit fly attain the necessary registration in order to open up valuable export markets such as the US and EU.
