The herbicide Totril has been re-approved for use on leek, onion, garlic and shallot crops.

The Allium and Brassica Centre’s Andy Richardson has welcomed the news, which now allows unlimited treatments to crops as opposed to previous restrictions.

He said: “Totril is the most widely used post-emergence contact herbicide in allium crops. It’s an essential tool and growers will be relieved that future availability has been secured.

“Previously we were limited to four applications, regardless of dose. The new label has no restriction on the number of treatments, within the maximum individual dose of 1.8 litres per hectare and the maximum total dose of 2.8l/ha per crop.

“This adds much-needed flexibility. Growers can now start with low doses, and increase rates as crops develop, without the risk of running out of options before weed control programmes have been completed.”

Bayer CropScience product manager Nathan Whitehouse said that the grower ‘use up’ period for product with the previous label runs up to November 30, 2010. “This means growers with any product left over from this year can still use it on next season’s crops without concern,” he said.
