Herbert’s to distribute Wyma VegePolisher

The washer technology was developed in New Zealand in the late 1990s by Wyma Engineering, and has been modified to its current specifications over the last seven years.

This type of washing dominates the potato and carrot market in New Zealand with an estimated 80 per cent of all table products being washed by this process. It has also experienced similar success in Australia in the last three years.

The rotary brush system is particularly effective for washing potatoes. The wash quality is more advanced compared to a conventional rotary drum or pressure jet system. Jo Herbert, RJ Herbert’s marketing manager, says: “Traditionally, deep eyes and irregular tuber shapes have been difficult to clean. However, this is no longer the case as they are cleaned with ease using this system.”

Significant testing has proved the Wyma can remove Rhizoctonia and skin staining. This allows some product to be upgraded from waste or class two to premium status. It can also be run gently enough to wash early season potatoes without damage, while the brushing process has a polishing effect on the tuber skin that leaves a noticeable shine.

Wyma has carried out extensive research into different bristle types and configurations and have more than 20 types of brush configuration for the polisher. Although some of the brush types have very subtle differences, they can have a big impact on the quality of wash and effectiveness of the machine. The brush choice is often chosen specifically for customers potato varieties and washing requirements.

Earlier this year Herbert Engineering hosted demonstrations for customers using their own produce. Herbert says: “Many customers revisited for more extensive testing and we are now busy providing proposals for installation of this machine into professional growers and packers production lines. One particular test involved processing three tonnes of reject potatoes through the VegePolisher and then onto an Autosort system. The results were positive with more than 30 per cent of potatoes upgraded fro a traditionally low value crop to packable class one.”

The company is confident about supplying this machine in the potato market after reviewing its quality, design, manufacture and proven technology in the marketplace. Herbert adds: “We believe we will see a similar transition in washing methods in the UK that mirrors the changes in New Zealand and Australia.”

Andrew Barclay, Wyma Engineering’s managing director, says: “I am absolutely thrilled that Herbert Engineering have agreed to market the VegePolisher to the UK potato market and I am sure the washer will add significant value to Herbert’s customers in much the same way it has done to our customers in New Zealand and Australia.
