Supermarkets will celebrate Valentine's Day by stocking heart-shaped punnets of strawberries.
Stocked by stores including Sainsbury's, M&S and The Co-operative, the 300g packs of strawberries – mainly exported from Egypt – will hit the shelves the weekend prior to 14 February.
The line, from Total Berry and packaging firm Infia UK, is a step forward from previous Valentine's Day ranges, according to Total Berry's technical director Rupert Carter.
He said: 'Fundamental changes include the introduction of a revolutionary recyclable heat-sealed film, replacing the previous clip-style lid, delivering a 15 per cent reduction in pack weight.
'This brings with it cost and environmental benefits as well as helping to reduce in-store wastage.'
Carter revealed that trials are now taking place to explore other ways to extend the shelf life and quality of Total Berry strawberries.
The Valentine's Day strawberry punnet will be on display at Total Produce’s Fruit Logistica stand located at Hall 5.2 A-07.
