The Horticultural Development Council (HDC) is showcasing two energy saving projects for protected salad crops on September 10 at a HDC open day in East Yorkshire.

The event will focus on the use of thermal screens, how growers can make further energy savings while maintaining yields and temperature integration, how refining the technique has led to a 10 per cent reduction in energy use with a five per cent increase in yield.

Jenny Lang, HDC communications manager said: “We urge growers to come and see these trials in progress and assess the benefits of these projects for themselves.”

Meanwhile, industry consultants will be providing a background understanding of environmental control and energy savings. Also, Martin van Staaldunen of Leen Husman providing a Dutch perspective on what is happening with screens in Holland.
