Hazera eyes up beauty trend

Beauty will be a key trend for Hazera Genetics in the future, it revealed last week.

The Israel-based seed breeder is aiming to develop peppers and tomatoes with high levels of vitamin E, which has been proven to improve skin.

The ACE pepper - high in vitamins A, C and E - will come under the beauty driver, as will other products in the Hazera Lifestyle range, including high-lycopene tomatoes.

Dr Alon Haberfeld, tomato product manager at Hazera, told FPJ: “We know that anti-oxidents and vitamin E are good for your skin and consumption should reinforce that.

“A lot of research on the effect of vitamin E on the skin is being done because we have to make sure it is scientifically viable before we can make any claims.

“But a couple of years more research needs to be done.

“If you can tell your daughter to eat fruit and vegetables because they are good for you it is one thing, but you will get a better response if you tell her it will make her pretty,” he added. “Peppers are the only fresh product that are naturally high in vitamin E and, while you can get the vitamin from meat and nuts, their fat content is also high.”

Haberfeld told FPJ that the concept of good health was very general, and that more specific benefits are needed.
