The artistic skills of a nine-year old school girl from Scarborough have won her the top prize in a national ‘Design an Apple Character’ competition run by Le Crunch to demonstrate that fruit can be more fun than sweets and snacks.

Charlotte More created her apple character in the likeness of her favourite story book hero, Harry Potter, winning her family a holiday to Disneyland and her school, Seamer and Irton Primary School, £1,000 worth of school equipment.

Inspired by Charlotte’s creativity, head teacher Jenny Henshaw organised an ‘applethon’ character-making class on March 18 with the help of Le Crunch apples. The school is an active participant in the healthy schools scheme and has stepped up its activity to help prevent childhood obesity following the publication of new research showing that one in three parents in the North East struggle to get their kids to eat fruit and vegetables.

Charlotte joined her classmates to create their favourite story book characters using apples and other fruit and vegetables. At the event Charlotte was presented with a model of her apple Harry Potter character and the school received a cheque for £1,000.

The winning apple character uses two apples (a Granny Smith and Golden Delicious) for the head and body and black liquorice laces for his famous round-rimmed spectacles with two blueberries as the eyes. To complete the ensemble, Harry is dressed in a wizard outfit consisting of a tall cucumber hat, a robe made from cabbage leaves and a liquorice lace broomstick. Charlotte also used a hollowed out tomato as a cauldron filled with a magic brew, a cheese slice inscribed with magic spells and a liquorice wand.

The Design an Apple Character competition forms part of an educational campaign, sponsored by Le Crunch to make healthy eating and exercising more fun. This year’s programme focuses on encouraging children to exercise and follow a healthy eating diet.

The second and third place winners are Katie Ibbotson from Zouch Primary School in Tidworth, Wilts, and Coco Bates, from Christ Church Primary School in Hampstead, North London.

“This competition has really captured children’s imagination and we’ve had a phenomenal response with all kinds of apple characters ranging from nurse, DJ, fireman and pirate. We chose Charlotte’s Harry Potter for the simplicity of the design and clever use of other fruit and vegetables,” said Jacques Vanoye, president of the French Apples Marketing Committee.
