The chief executive of Haldanes has stepped down just months into his top job at the fledgling supermarket.

Former Aberness operations director Graeme Hay resigned from the position to pursue other ventures, but said the resignation was not an indicator of poor performance at the retailer, but quite the opposite.

Hay told The Grocer the chain had had “an amazing six months”, achieving its goal of opening 26 fully operational stores by mid-April across Scotland and England.

Hay said: “I take great satisfaction from the fact that I’m leaving the company in a strong financial position.”

Haldanes opened its first stores in November with a key policy of sourcing 35 per cent of its food and drink from local producers at each of the nationwide stores. In particular, stores north of the border include an enhanced range of Scottish food.

Hay leaves behind managing director Gordon Emslie, who has experience with William Low, Asda and Sainsbury’s; Chris Laud, financial director, who has held senior positions within Boots; and non-executive director Steve Back, who has previously been group financial director at Budgens before moving to Somerfield, where he became chief executive.
