A hailstorm on Monday in the Valencia area of Spain has damaged nectarine, persimmon and citrus trees in the region. Hail struck parts of La Costera, Picassent, and Canals, the local growers’ association Ava-Asaja reported. In some areas damage to individual citrus plots was up to 40 per cent.

Many fields are still flooded making it difficult to assess damage further. "We will have to wait a few more days to visit production facilities and evaluate effects on citrus, vines and persimmon which were in flower," said association president Cristóbal Aguado. Effects of the hail could have been worse, he said were it not for the mitigating effect of heavy rainfall that accompanied the hailstorm.

Parts of the region had already been struck by hail on June 10.
