The British Potato Council has developed a free instruction pack for schools on how to hold a ‘potato day’ in a bid to encourage children to eat potatoes as part of their school meal.

The pack, which will be launched during National School Meals Week, includes a comprehensive guide to caterers for setting up the event and encourages schools to highlight different varieties of potatoes and cooking methods. Organisers say having a Potato Day can be fun; highlight the joys of healthier eating and can encourage children to have a school lunch.

The pack also contains recipe cards featuring 10 nutritionally-balanced potato dish ideas designed to appeal to school children and fun potato stickers for pupils who have a school lunch.

BPC marketing executive, Caroline Evans, said: “By creating a special themed Potato Day, we hope to encourage more children to take up a lunch-time meal and also to get them enjoying potatoes as part of healthy balanced meals. Potatoes are a great food for children and can help caterers meet nutritional guidelines. They are naturally low in fat, provide fibre, vitamin C and folate, as well as being low in salt.”
