Flower growers in Guernsey are being advised by their leaders to consider restructuring their production base and position at the quality end of the market in the UK.

It is felt necessary to develop further the Quality Assurance Brand, which has been developed by the First Group group. This group of flower growers has moved forward with considerable success. It is the successor to the Guernsey Quality Assurance Group, and represents some of the leading flower growers on the island.

The group has created a co-operative base for those in the scheme.

When the Guernsey Committee for Horticulture slimmed down its service to the industry, the vase testing unit, which it established at its headquarters, was offered to growers who wished to continue with such a facility.

For a time it was used, and some useful information was obtained from testing the life of different flower varieties in different environments. However, the industry has decided not to continue operating the unit, and the accommodation has been switched to other usage.
