Peter Falla has died at the age of 71

The President of Guernsey's Committee for Horticulture, Deputy Peter Falla, has died in hospital in Southampton. He had been flown there for treatment of a heart condition.

He has been a member of the Island Parliament since 1994 and President of the Committee for Horticulture since 1997.

His working life started in London where he was engaged as a solicitor's articled clerk, but the call of his island home was too great and he returned to Guernsey and took up tomato growing, followed by flowers and then herbs.

During his term as president of the Committee for Horticulture he has dealt with controversial problems, such as the winding down of the Horticultural Advisory Service and pressures to introduce a state subsidy to reduce freight charges on exported produce, the latter being turned down by his committee.

In addition he has presented policy letters to the Island Parliament to provide financial aid to the growing industry, and this September was due to take another such letter to the House.

Peter was 71. He leaves his wife Barbara, two sons Simon and Nick and a daughter Sharon. Our condolences go out to all of them.
